Good food, overpriced, service so-so, small portions, and left hungry after tea,

Posted bylesfranon 1/17/2009

Went to tea here recently with 4 friends. Located in charming downtown Hillsboro with plenty of fun antique shops. If you want to do the tea for 2 you have to reserve 1 day in advance. I paid for 2 teas in advance ($80). The price on there website is wrong. We got there the table was set beautifully and we were brought our tea pretty quickly. The choice of loose tea is nice. The tea tray arrived and we were shocked at how skimpy it was. Having recently moved back from NYC and missing Tea & Sympathy terribly, I know what a good afternoon tea should entail. While the sandwiches and scones were fantastic the desserts were nothing special, they ordered them in when they make amazing scones, we all left hungry. I have never left tea hungry. I suggest getting a scone and tea for the $8ish price and skip the overpriced tea tray. The service was nothing special we were never even offered water.

Unfriendly and overpriced

The atmosphere is nice. That's the only thing going for them. The food is way over priced. The staff is unfriendly. I wasn't impressed and won't go back.

Great Ambiance and Delicious Food

When you walk into the Stratford House, you can imagine that you have stepped back in time. The ambience of this restaurant is reminiscent of the late 1800's. The decor is very tasteful and elegant with antiques and beautiful tablecloths. I especially enjoy going to the Stratford House during the holidays because they decorate it so festively. I have received good service; although I have encountered a waitress a time or two who is less friendly (I attribute this to the small town in which it's located). There is serve yourself coffee, which is very good (I'm a bit of a coffee aficionado) and the food has always been good and tastefully presented. The prices are comparable to other local restaurants for lunch ($10 or so). If you have time, be sure to check out the adjoining shop which has beautiful antiques affordably priced.

Horrible service

I can't rate the food because I never got any. We went in there in the morning and there were 3-4 other parties in the restaurant. We were seated after about 1 minute, and proceeded to wait about 5 minutes. A family of 5-6 came in and was seated near us. They received their water, we continued to sit (no water). By now it has been about 10 minutes. Then the waitress comes by to take their order. At that point we got up and left, having waisted about 15 minutes of our morning.
